Guelph police say a 21-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder after a security guard was killed at the city’s downtown train station.
Police say officers were called to a reported disturbance in the underground tunnel at Guelph Central Station on Carden Street just before 9 p.m. on Wednesday where they found a man who was being assaulted.
According to police, the 63-year-old security guard was taken to Guelph General Hospital where he later died of his injuries.
“At this point, we are not releasing any more details as far as what exactly happened other than that there was a disturbance going on and the assault ultimately led to the death of the security guard,” Const. Kyle Grant said.

Jordan Langelier made his first appearance in court on Thursday afternoon. He was handcuffed and wearing a white jumpsuit while sitting in the prisoner’s box.
Langelier did not speak except to confirm his name and age. He remains in custody and will return to court on Tuesday.
A court order prevents the publication of any evidence presented in court.
The victim has been identified as Mario Ruffolo who worked for GardaWorld at their Guelph branch.
“We are deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic death,” the security agency said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and loved ones of our colleague during this difficult time.”
Metrolinx, which owns the property Guelph Central Station is situated on, also released a statement on Thursday afternoon.
“We are extremely saddened by the news that security guard under contract with one of our transit partners was killed at Guelph Central Station,” Metrolinx stated. “Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and friends.
Metrolinx is reminding all customers to call 911 and then the transit safety dispatch at 416-202-4400 if they see something suspicious or witness a crime in progress.
Guelph police opened the scene early Thursday morning but are still looking for witnesses to come forward.
