A 48-year-old Kingston man has been charged after allegedly kicking a service dog in training.
On Thursday around noon, several Kingston police officers were called downtown after a man allegedly assaulted a puppy training to be a service animal.
The incident took place at the corner of Queen and Montreal streets when a man allegedly booted a family’s dog as they were crossing paths. Police say the alleged attack was unprovoked.
The dog was wearing a vest that read “puppy in training” at the time of the alleged incident.
Kingston police say an officer on foot patrol, Const. Andrew Sullivan, was a block away near Princess and Montreal streets when he heard the commotion.
Police say the suspect fled the scene and that Sullivan followed him to Hotel Dieu Hospital on Brock Street, where he was apprehended.
He was arrested and charged with willfully causing unnecessary pain and suffering to an animal.
