What makes a good captain?

On this episode of Around the OHL, hosts Jake Jeffrey and Mike Stubbs are talking leadership and the qualities that make a good captain.

They talk about the benefit of having multiple leaders on a team, how captains can take on different roles, which types of leaders can be successful, and how being a captain can be a great experience for young junior hockey players as they look to move through the professional ranks.

Some current captains are joining the show this week to talk about leaders:

Ty Dellandrea: In his fourth season with the Flint Firebirds, Dellandrea enters his second year as team captain. As both Jake and Mike discuss during the show, Dellandrea is a model leader and team captain. Dealing with more downs than ups during his time in Flint, he stuck with it and never bailed on the last-place team like many expected, even after being selected in the first round of the 2018 NHL draft by the Dallas Stars. There was also some talk that Dellandrea wasn’t going to report to Flint when they made him the fifth-overall pick in the 2016 OHL draft. He reported and played a gigantic role in turning the franchise around during his four years.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Akil Thomas: The Los Angeles Kings draft pick has enjoyed some good leaders during his time in Niagara, and now it’s his turn to lead. Thomas talks about some of those things he learned and acting as an older brother to mentor the younger players, and shares some of his leadership styles. There’s a lot more responsibility that comes with wearing that ‘C’ and Thomas talks about handling the pressure while enjoying the honour.

Danny Syvret: He played a dozen seasons of professional hockey after he helped lead the London Knights to OHL and Memorial Cup championships in 2005. Leading a team full of future NHLers is not an easy task. It’s one thing to expect to win and an entirely different thing to meet expectations and follow through. That’s what the Knights did that season, and Syvret shares some of his thoughts on what it was like captaining one of the best junior hockey teams ever..
