Toronto police say a 20-year-old man has died and another man has life-threatening injuries after a shooting inside a north-end bar early Thursday.
A spokesperson told Global News emergency crews were called The Red Room Restaurant on Jane Street, near Lawrence Avenue West, just after 1:20 a.m. with reports of a shooting.
Police said a man reportedly walked into the bar and began shooting. Two people were hit in the gunfire.
A man, who was later identified as Miganeh Idriss, died outside of the establishment. A second man was rushed to hospital in critical condition by paramedics with a police escort.
Officers didn’t release suspect information as of early Thursday, but a grey SUV was reportedly seen taking off from the scene.
The Toronto police homicide squad was called in to take over the investigation.
Thursday’s incident wasn’t the first one at the bar. Less than three weeks ago, a man was shot there at around 2 p.m. on a Sunday. He survived the shooting. In June 2018, there was a stabbing and again the victim survived.
Coun. Frances Nunziata (Ward 5 York South-Weston) told Global News she has called the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario and said she wants the bar’s liquor license revoked. It remains closed as police seek a warrant to go in.
“We’ve had stabbings and we’ve had shootings, and so they’ve been focused on this establishment for a while. And the community is really fed up,” Nunziata said.
