Accused in Evanston double murder acquires lawyer

Police transfer Guevara Wilson Clorina to the Calgary Police Service’s Arrest Processing Unit. Global News

CALGARY – The man charged with killing a woman and her young son in Evanston earlier this month now has a lawyer.

Guevara Clorina is charged with two counts of second-degree murder in the deaths of Chona Manzana and her five-year-old son Gabriel.

Their bodies were found in their Evanston home on May 16th.

On Monday, Clorina made a brief court appearance via CCTV.

Defence lawyer Jim Lutz asked for an adjournment, as he hasn’t received any disclosure from the Crown.

Outside of court, Lutz said his client is worried about the serious charges he faces.

“Understandably, he’s concerned about the allegations,” says Lutz. “The tendency is that you jump to conclusions very quickly, so he’s hoping that given a little bit of time, the disclosure will give some answers that he’s looking for.”

Lutz says there’s been no decision on whether his client will be seeking bail.

Clorina is scheduled to return to court on June 17th.
