Three people were taken to hospital, one in critical condition, after a multi-vehicle crash involving a school bus near Fernie, B.C., Thursday afternoon.
Drive BC says the crash happened on Highway 3 at Lynch Road about seven kilometres north of the city, prompting crews to shut down the highway in both directions.
RCMP said the school bus had stopped on the highway and a motorhome was stopped behind it just before 3 p.m. MT.
A transport truck travelling in the same direction failed to stop and rear-ended the motorhome, causing it to crash into the school bus ahead.
Police said the driver of the motorhome was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
B.C. Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) said one patient was airlifted to hospital in Calgary, while two more were taken by ground ambulance in Fernie.
STARS Air Ambulance said the 64-year-old male it transported to Calgary was in critical condition.
BCEHS would not say what condition the other two patients were in.
In a statement posted on Fernie Secondary School’s website, the local school district said one of its buses was involved in the crash with two students on board.
The district said the students and the bus driver were not seriously hurt, which RCMP confirmed.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
Traffic was backed up for roughly 15 kilometres from the crash site.
Drive BC said the highway reopened just before 1 a.m.
