Police, EMS and the firefighters responded to Highway 3 at Range Road 16-1, about three kilometres east of Taber, at 12:45 p.m.

A car was driving west on the highway when it collided head-on with a tractor-trailer going east.

Both vehicles became engulfed in flames and came to rest in the north ditch, police said.

A 19-year-old woman, who was alone in the car, died on scene. The 65-year-old man driving the semi was taken to the Taber Health Centre in stable, non-life-threatening condition, and later released.

EMS initially said two people were killed, however, officials later clarified that only one person died.

The identity of the girl who died was not released and the cause of the collision remains under investigation. Traffic was detoured for several hours on Saturday.

Taber is about 50 kilometres east of Lethbridge in southern Alberta.
