The causeway that leads to one of the Lower Mainland’s busiest container terminals was closed in both directions for most of thursday Thursday, as police investigated a serious crash involving two semi-trucks.
The BC Coroners Service confirms it is investigating the death of a male involved with the crash.
Delta police say they were called to the 3500-block of Deltaport Way around 9:45 a.m.
A truck that was travelling eastbound on Deltaport Way collided with a westbound truck, police said in a statement. Officers and fire crews arrived shortly after the collision.
Spokesperson Cris Leykauf told Global News one of the semi-trucks caught fire.
Leykauf said the fire was still burning at 11 a.m., describing it as “very hot and very large.”

Police confirmed later Thursday that one driver was injured, but those injuries were not serious.
“This is a very serious collision, and investigations such as this take time,” Leykauf said in a statement. “The process of clearing the road of a collision of this magnitude is also complicated.”
Police said the cause of the crash has not yet been determined.
The road was reopened shortly before midnight on Thursday.
