The 21-year-old woman said she was at home at around 5 p.m. on Monday when a man knocked on her door and asked to use the phone, according to police.

She said when she refused, the man then forced his way into her apartment in the 100-block of Wellman Crescent, sexually assaulted her and threatened to harm her if she tried to leave, police said.

The woman was able to escape just over 14 hours later and called police.

The suspect was located in the apartment and arrested, police said.

Joseph Yaremko, 37, is charged with sexual assault and forcible confinement.

Yaremko is known by police.

In 2014 he was arrested following a five-hour standoff with officers after he had escaped from a hospital.

He was a prisoner at the time.

Police believe the victim and suspect are not known to each other.

The Saskatoon Sexual Assault and Information Centre said instances in which a stranger assaults a victim are rare.

Its executive director noted about 80 per cent of all reported sexual assaults occur between people who know each other.

“[The victim] was acquainted with the perpetrator and trusted them, which is how they gained access to the victim in the first place,” Faye Davis said. “So stranger assaults are very uncommon.”

He appeared Thursday morning in Saskatoon provincial court and remains in custody until his next court appearance on June 13.
