The homicide unit has been called in to investigate a man’s death after a weapons complaint in northeast Edmonton closed a number of streets Wednesday evening.
At around 6:06 p.m., police were called to a weapons complaint involving several men in the area of 167 Avenue and 76 Street.
A Global News crew at the scene on Wednesday night noted several police vehicles in the area and a 7-11 convenience store taped off. Police appeared to be investigating both in the store and on the street.
As officers were heading to the area, a 911 call was received about a collision involving a number of parked vehicles about a block away from the location of the weapons complaint.
When officers arrived at the collision, they found a 36-year-old man with “injuries consistent with an altercation,” according to police.
Paramedics responded and treated the man, but he died at the scene.
A few hours later, police took a man into custody. It’s believed the 27-year-old was involved in the original altercation.
Police did not release any information on the man taken into custody.
An autopsy has been scheduled for Friday morning.
On Wednesday night, police officers were expected to have 168 Avenue closed between 74 Street and 76 Street “for the next few hours as officers secure the scene” after responding to a weapons complaint, a spokesperson for the Edmonton Police Service said in an email.
