Multiple people were injured in an avalanche in Kananaskis on Saturday, according to emergency responders.
STARS Air Ambulance responded to Fortress Junction at around 6:20 p.m., taking a female of unknown age to Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary.
STARS could not confirm her condition.
EMS took two people — a teen boy and a woman — both with serious injuries but in stable, non-life-threatening condition to Foothills.
The Kananaskis Country Public Safety Section said there were eight people involved in an avalanche on Mount Lawson on Saturday. The safety section said the group did not have avalanche rescue equipment.
It added that the avalanche was triggered by heat at about 2,800 metres in elevation and travelled a “significant distance downslope.”
“The party was caught in a gully at a much lower elevation that was well below the snow line,” the safety section said in a Facebook post.
The safety group asked people to be mindful that it’s still snowy up high and avalanche hazards are very real.
“A widespread avalanche cycle occurred [Saturday] afternoon with the warm temperatures and intense solar radiation, and this trend is likely to continue,” the safety section said.
“Periods of heavy rain could also initiate avalanches at this time of year. Avoid avalanche terrain later in the day and do not expose yourself to terrain traps. Be aware of overhead hazard, including terrain that is a long way above you.”
