Third suspect in bus driver beating case arrested

MONTREAL — Montreal police Thursday night arrested the third and final suspect in the savage beating of a bus driver early Wednesday morning.

The man in his 20s was arrested in Montreal North as police were carrying out a search warrant in his apartment, police said. He is to be arraigned in court Friday on charges of aggravated assault and breach of a probation order.

On Wednesday evening, police arrested the first two males thanks to tips from the public and the widespread release of a surveillance video.

On Thursday afternoon, Jeffrey St. Cloud, 20, was arraigned in court on a count of aggravated assault in the beating of STM bus driver Marc-Olivier Fortin. St. Cloud pleaded not guilty.

A high-quality video taken by a camera on the bus clearly showed the faces of the three males, an important factor in their identification, said a police spokesperson.

St. Cloud walked into a police station and gave himself up after his image was splashed all over the media, said Constable Simon Delorme. The other, a minor, was found thanks to information phoned in to the SPVM.

The beating happened early Wednesday, around 2:30 a.m., when the trio entered a bus travelling north on St. Laurent Blvd. They exchanged words with the driver then proceeded to the back of the bus to eat the pizza they had brought into the bus.

On leaving the bus when it stopped at Jean Talon St., one of the assailants is seen spitting at the driver. The beating of the 36-year-old driver was not shown on the video the police released.

The driver was taken to hospital in serious condition where he remains Thursday.

The other man under arrest is 17.
