Two of three suspects arrested in Montreal bus driver beating

MONTREAL — Two out of three suspects sought in the severe beating of an STM bus driver in Little Italy were arrested late Wednesday thanks to tips from the public and the widespread release of surveillance tape.

A high-quality video taken by a camera on the bus clearly showed the faces of the three men, an important factor in their identification, said a police spokesperson.

One of the men, age 20, walked into a police station and gave himself up after his image was splashed all over the media, said Constable Simon Delorme. The other, a minor, was found thanks to information phoned in to the SPVM.

The beating happened early Wednesday, around 2:30 a.m., when three men entered a bus travelling north on St. Laurent Blvd.

They exchanged words with the driver then proceeded to the back of the bus to eat the pizza they had brought into the bus.

On leaving the bus when it stopped at Jean Talon St., they are seen spitting at the driver. The beating of the 36-year-old driver was not shown on the video the police released.

The driver was taken to hospital in serious condition where he remains Thursday.

The men under arrest are 17 and 20. Constable Rafael Bergeron with the SPVM said the third suspect, a white male thought to be in his 20s, is still at large.

The two in custody are expected to appear in front of a judge at the Montreal courthouse Thursday on charges of assault.
