Sask. traffic enforcement not letting up for Spring Brake

SASKATOON – April’s traffic blitz is targeting aggressive Saskatchewan motorists, while Saskatoon police STEP up enforcement today and Thursday.

Motorists who exhibit aggressive driving behaviours on Saskatchewan roads are being targeted during this month’s traffic blitz, “Operation Spring Brake.”

According to Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI), aggressive driving in the province contributed to 88 deaths in 2012.

Provincial traffic enforcement will be watching for violations such as speeding, running red lights/stop signs, stunting, racing and dangerous passing.

“We typically see drivers participating in more risky driving behaviour, once road conditions improve,” said Chief Troy Hagen, President of the Saskatchewan Association of Chiefs of Police.

Operation Spring Brake will be held in conjuncture with a Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) resulting in a concentrated effort in Saskatoon.

STEP is a multi-agency group focused on strategies to improve Saskatoon traffic safety along with SGI, RCMP, government ministries and rail police.

Saskatoon police will be concentrating enforcement at various locations throughout the Bridge City.

STEP enforcement are watching for speeders, seat belt violations, handheld device infractions, unlicensed drivers and impaired driving.
