SASKATOON – Saskatchewan traffic enforcement authorities are gearing up for their Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) next week in the province, including Saskatoon.

The Saskatoon police traffic unit announced the STEP spring enforcement blitz will take place on April 24 and 25.

The two-day initiative will be a “concentrated” traffic enforcement at various locations in the Bridge City.

STEP is a multi-agency group focused on strategies to improve Saskatoon traffic safety along with Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI), Mounties, government ministries and rail police.

Officers will be watching for speeders, seat belt violations, handheld device infractions, unlicensed drivers and impaired driving.

Staff Sgt. Tony Nadon says it’s “Saskatoon’s turn” for the program and its perfect timing. Civic and private crews are viciously attacking spring pothole season and this enforcement will allow quicker and safer patching.

SGI says other cities can expect their own STEP in the upcoming months.

For the rest of Saskatchewan, a province-wide traffic blitz focused on aggressive  driving will coincide with Saskatoon’s two-day initiative.

Last month’s province-wide traffic blitz, Operation Hang Up Buckle Up, focused on cellphone and seatbelt violations resulting in 282 tickets being handed out.
