SASKATOON – The latest provincial traffic blitz is underway in Saskatchewan.
Police forces and Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) have teamed up for operation hang up, buckle up.
The blitz, which runs today and tomorrow, targets cellphone use while driving and seatbelt violations.
“We are going to continue to work with law enforcement on these vital issues, as we know that it requires both education and enforcement to create change in terms of driving habits,” said Andrew Cartmell, president and CEO of SGI.
According to SGI, distracted driving, which includes cellphone use, contributes to more than 9,400 collisions and 50 deaths annually on average.
“Why would drivers deliberately choose to risk their own safety and that of their families and neighbours?” said Regina police chief Troy Hagen.
Last month’s blitz, operation fall frenzy, saw law enforcement officials issue 1,079 tickets to motorists during Thanksgiving weekend.
