Sask. roads a little safer after traffic blitz

A two-day blitz took place across Saskatchewan last Wednesday and Thursday, resulting in 516 tickets. 

These offences included 216 improper or non-seatbelt use, 51 for cellphone use while driving, 38 for disobeying red lights or stops signs and almost 90 for speeding. 

Along with SGI, enforcement officers teamed up for “Operation Crossroads,” which targeted intersection violations including failing to yield, failing to stop and jaywalking.

Enforcement officers were also on the lookout for vehicle operators and passengers that are not wearing their seat belts and drivers using cell phones. 

Prince Albert hosted the Selective Traffic Enforcement Project (STEP) during the blitz and tallied 221 tickets, six seized vehicles and two 24 hour suspensions. 

P.A. police say its motorists still choose not to obey traffic laws which have been implemented for the safety of our communities.

According to SGI, improper seatbelt use results in nearly 70 fatalities each year. Distracted driving, which includes cell phone use claims nearly 50 lives annually. 

The last coordinated traffic safety blitz, “Operation Hang Up, Buckle Up, Gear Up,” took place in June and saw more than 700 tickets issued.
