A new brewery will soon be setting up shop in the heart of downtown Okotoks, Alta.

Okotoks officials announced on Monday that the owners of Banded Peak Ventures Inc. had signed an agreement to purchase the Olde Towne Landmark Site with the intention of opening a craft distillery, restaurant and lounge.

The building, on the corner of McRae Street and Clark Avenue, was once the site of Okotoks’ town office and fire hall.

While both buildings were demolished, the tower for the fire department siren remains. As such, John Hromyk and Brett Schonekess of Banded Peak Ventures plan to call distillery-bistro the Firehall Distillery.

“Okotoks is a vibrant community that has great potential for this type of business,” Hromyk said in a news release. “Brett and I really respect the history of this downtown location and wanted to recognize that in the name.”

Town officials said the proposed development will help support downtown Okotoks as a destination that is used by a wide range of people for a variety of activities.

“This type of investment adds to the diversity of the business mix and provides an anchor that will help animate downtown Okotoks as a centre of social and cultural activities,” development services director Michael MacIntyre said.

Construction on the distillery-bistro is expected to begin later this year, with an anticipated opening date in early 2020.
