A 49-year-old man has been charged in connection with a collision on Whitemud Drive last month that left an Edmonton physiotherapist with serious injuries.

On Feb. 16, police said a blue Lexus RX350 was heading west on the Whitemud when it lost control near the Fox Drive exit and hit the centre barrier. The 31-year-old woman driving got out of the vehicle when a black Dodge Nitro, also heading west, slid into her and came to a stop in the far right lane of the freeway, police said.

The woman, a local physiotherapist named Alicia Souveny, was taken to hospital in serious condition. Police said Tuesday she remained in hospital.

Souveny is also a team trainer for a South Side Athletic Club Bantam AA hockey team.

At the time of the crash, police said speed and vehicle maintenance issues were likely factors in the crash. Impairment was not considered a factor.

Simon Simbizeye is charged with careless driving and driving at an unreasonable rate of speed. He is scheduled to appear in court on April 26.
