Emergency crews arrived on scene in southeast Calgary after a Canadian Pacific Railway train went off the tracks Saturday morning.
Police said they received reports of the derailment around 9:20 a.m. near Ogden Road at 50 Avenue S.E., with multiple train cars having reportedly left the tracks.
Kelly Malanik witnessed the incident.
“I saw two trains coming down,” she said. “One was already down the track a long way. Another train was coming slowly parallel with it in the same direction. Then, just as the two tracks come side by side, I saw the one train hit the cars and they both started rocking. I saw some start to derail, and that’s when I called 911.”
Calgary Fire, Calgary Police Service (CPS) and EMS were on scene shortly after.
CP Rail said there were no injuries and no public safety concerns.
According to police, the derailment has damaged nearby properties.
Police closed the right northbound lane on Ogden Road as emergency crews investigated.
It remains unclear exactly what the derailed cars were carrying, with CP Rail saying the “trains involved were carrying a variety of products.”
Preliminary results from CP Rail’s internal investigation indicated the cause is human error.
