Truck rollover on Highway 1 through Burnaby causes commuter chaos

Drivers heading through Burnaby on Highway 1 found themselves caught in gridlock on Thursday afternoon, after a truck rolled over near Burnaby Lake.

The crash, which happened just before 12:30 p.m., prompted the closure of most westbound lanes on the stretch of highway between Douglas Road and Willingdon Avenue for hours.

DriveBC said vehicles were temporarily being allowed through using the high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane, but the other three lanes were completely blocked as crews worked to remove the truck.

At one point, crews had to close the HOV lane as they attempted to turn over the truck, but their first attempt failed. The second try roughly an hour later finally got the truck back onto its wheels.

Around 3:30 p.m., DriveBC announced the truck had been cleared from the road and sweepers were clearing the lanes.

Minutes later, the road reopened.

Drivers were forced to find alternate routes through Burnaby to Vancouver throughout the afternoon

It remains unclear what led up to the collision, or whether anyone was injured.
