Montreal Plateau garbage cans get environmentally-friendly makeover

Some of the garbage cans in Montreal’s Plateau-Mont-Royal borough are looking a little different these days.

It’s part of a pilot project started by Coop Les Valoristes, a local community organization, to help keep certain types of materials out of landfills.

About 35 of the garbage cans now have a metal rack with slots for glass bottles and cans.

The idea is to make it easier for “binners” — people who rummage through the trash to find refundable items — to retrieve them without cutting their hands or hurting themselves.

Officials from the co-op say they’re hoping this simple change will encourage people to recycle.

This comes after a similar project was launched in Montreal’s Ville-Marie borough two years ago.
