The Saskatchewan Huskies men’s volleyball squad finished the regular season strong with three straight wins.

The last two matches were against the Mount Royal Cougars at the Physical Activity Complex in Saskatoon.

“Towards the end of the season, we were in a three-way tie with Calgary and Thompson Rivers for that five-seed, but then we hunkered down and we really got after it,” Huskies middle Daulton Sinoski said.

Those victories were a nice little confidence booster ahead of the Canada West quarter-finals, but the team knows it still has its work cut out for them against the Cougars.

“The difference is now that we got the eight-hour bus ride that (Mount Royal) had coming here, and we had some things to overcome in their barn, but at the end of the day it’s the same team,” Huskies head coach Nathan Bennett said.

This is also the first year the volleyball program has returned to the post-season since their 2015-16 campaign, and no one is happier than Saskatchewan’s lone fifth-year player Colin Fraser.

“I’m obviously going to do everything I can to keep going,” Fraser said.

“Everyone here has the same mentality, maybe a little bit less experience but … being there is a big deal for us and being able to push to the next level is also very important so we are really excited.”

Saskatchewan plays the Cougars at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday in Calgary.
