A fatal collision between a tractor trailer and a small car on Highway 401 near the offramp to Highway 8 around lunchtime left the Westbound 401 closed near Cambridge for several hours on Friday.
OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said that the driver of the car was a 65-year-old man from Kitchener man who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was also taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Schmidt says that westbound traffic was diverted at Hespeler Road and the highway may be reopened again sometime at around dinnertime.

OPP officers are still investigating the cause of the accident.

“It appears the collision took place somewhere before the bullnose exit lanes to Highway 8 began and there was post collision movement which took place which resulted in these vehicles coming to their resting place,” Schmidt explained in a video posted to Twitter.
“We’re going to try and figure out exactly precipitated this incident.”
UPDATE — Provincial Police say the westbound lanes are expected to re-open at around 6:00 pm.
