1 in custody after police vehicle stolen in Calgary

Calgary police say one person is in custody after a police cruiser was stolen on Monday afternoon.

Investigators were called at about 1:25 p.m. after the vehicle was stolen from the area of 28 Avenue and 14 Street S.W.

Police said an officer responding to a suspicious persons call had stopped on the side of the road near a group of people and got out to speak with the people.

One of the people reportedly got into the car and drove away. Police did not say whether the police vehicle was left running.

Police said the HAWCS helicopter as well as “covert resources” were used track the vehicle, which investigators determined had no firearms inside.

A half hour later, the vehicle was stopped at a parkade at the SAIT campus in northwest Calgary, police said, and a person was taken into custody.

Police said charges were pending against the individual arrested.
