Grass fire east of Calgary caused by train: fire official

A large grass fire was seen burning east of Calgary on Friday afternoon.

Smoke and flames could be seen from the blaze burning near Garden Road just off Highway 1 in Rocky View County.

The fire was not far from homes in the area and smoke could be seen drifting toward other houses.

According to Rocky View Fire Department district chief Dax Huba, the fire was “moving in multiple different directions.”

WATCH: Global1 captured footage of a grassfire burning east of Calgary on Friday.

Crews were called at about 3 p.m., Huba said, adding that firefighters from Rocky View County, Balzac, Langdon, Chestermere and Calgary responded.

“We’ve determined the fire was caused by the train that passed by,” said Dax Huba, district chief for Rocky View Fire Department.

He also said the fire spread over two properties, burning crops on one and a grass field on another.

Officials were getting close to calling an evacuation, as the fire quickly spread to about the size of about 18 football fields — three in width and six in length.

As of 4:30 p.m., the fire was completely knocked down and the area was safe for travel, but crews were still on scene looking for hot spots.

Huba said no injuries were reported.
