GlobalFest 2018: Fireworks expected to shoot through smoky skies over Calgary

WATCH: Global Calgary's cameras get an exclusive look at how Alberta's 'most explosive festival' lights up the city's sky – Aug 15, 2018

A smoky haze has been making for dreary days in Calgary but the city’s night skies are about to light up.

GlobalFest is back for it’s 16th year, kicking off the first of five spectacular pyrotechnic performances on Thursday.

Wildfire smoke drifting in from B.C. is not expected to hinder viewing of the fireworks displays and may in fact make them more dynamic.

“Because there’s so much smoke in the air, it actually magnifies the brilliance of the show because there are so many more millions of particles reflecting all of the fireworks’ candle wattage,” GlobalFest producer Ken Goosen said.

Newcomer Ukraine will make its debut opening night at the Trico Homes International Fireworks Festival.

Spain, Philippines and China round out the competition that takes place at Elliston Park in the city’s southeast. The grand finale is set for Aug. 25 and will be performed by GlobalFest’s own team of pyro musical artists.

In addition to the fireworks displays, the Sunbelt Rentals One World Festival will open its doors at 6 p.m. each evening. The festival will feature a number of activities including cultural pavilions, two performance stages, ethnic food, a bar and beer garden and a night market.

Tickets for GlobalFest can be purchased at select locations across the city or online. For more ticket and festival information visit www.globalfest.ca.
