What’s open and closed on Canada Day in Toronto

Here’s a look at what’s open and closed for July 1 and on Monday — when most offices and retail businesses are observing the Canada Day holiday.

What’s open

  • For shopping, it’s best to call ahead, as many big box and grocery stores and malls are open on Sunday but closed Monday. CF Toronto Eaton Centre, Toronto Premium Outlets, Square One, Upper Canada Mall, Pacific Mall are open on Monday as well as Sunday. Check their websites for hours.
  • Tourist attractions are generally open, including the CN Tower, Ontario Science Centre, the Royal Ontario Museum, Canada’s Wonderland, Toronto Zoo, Hockey Hall of Fame, Casa Loma, Ripley’s Aquarium, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and Legoland.
  • Bars, restaurants, and small retail operations can stay open on public holidays, along with retail businesses operating in designated tourist areas, according to City of Toronto bylaws.
  • TTC is running on a normal Sunday service schedule on July 1, and a holiday schedule on Monday. GO Transit is running on a Saturday schedule on Monday.
  • LCBO locations are open on Sunday, closed Monday. Beer Stores are open on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. with some exceptions, and closed Monday as well.
  • Toronto’s municipal golf courses, tennis courts and splash pads, beaches and outdoor swimming pools are open.
  • Six of the city’s historic sites — Colborne Lodge, Fort York, Mackenzie House, Scarborough Museum and Montgomery’s Inn — will also be open on Sunday.
  • Movie theatres generally stay open each day of the year

What’s closed

  • Government offices
  • Toronto Public Library branches are closed on Sunday and Monday
  • Canada Post mail collection and delivery is cancelled
  • Banks and many retail outlets, including the LCBO and Beer Stores, are closed on Monday
  • St. Lawrence Market (Sunday and Monday, except the antique market on Sunday)
  • There is no daytime residential waste collection on Mondays in Toronto, but some other waste management services are impacted by the holiday
  • Community centres and indoor pools are closed on Sunday
