Winnipeg Police arrest man armed with sawed-off rifle

Winnipeg police took two people into custody Tuesday after a carjacking and robbery, and one of them had a loaded shot gun.

Police responded to a report of a vehicle robbery near Stella Avenue and McGregor Street Monday just before 10 p.m..

They said a 28-year-old victim was sitting in his vehicle when he was approached by three men, one of whom was armed with a sawed-off rifle.

A suspect pointed the rifle at the victim and told him to hand over his car keys and get out. The suspects then got into the vehicle, robbed the victim of his belongings and drove off.

On Tuesday, just before 5 a.m., police saw the stolen vehicle parked in the 700 block of Selkirk Avenue and arrested a lone male occupant. The man was found to have a can of bear spray and was taken into custody.

That same day, just before 11:30 a.m., police saw a man involved in a dispute with a taxi driver in the 700 block of Flora Avenue.

Police said when they stopped to intervene, the man tried to run away but tripped and fell when a loaded sawed-off rifle fell down his pant leg.

The sawed-off .22 calibre rifle was seized along with several personal items stolen in the vehicle robbery.

The two men were taken into custody and charged with multiple firearm and robbery-related offences.
