Today I showed the ioSafe Extreme Ultra-Rugged portable hard
drive on my Global TV Monday Morning News Tech Talk segment. I used the 500 GB version.
Sizes in Canada start at 250GB for about $200 and $400 for a 750 GB capacity.
Internet-based “cloud” storage sounds great but is designed
for small amounts of data for consumers. That’s because today’s average computer
with HD home video and thousands of high quality photos, say, 750 Gigabytes,
would take between one and two years to upload to Internet-based or cloud (including iCloud) storage.
That won’t make your ISP provider happy. Think about back-to-earth solutions for your large files
like quality tough hard drives and SSD drives.
The solid billet aluminum ioSafe drive I showed, is incredibly tough
inside and outside your home. It can take a three meter drop, three meters
under salt or fresh water for up to 72 hours, is crush resistant to 1100 KG, laughs
at full immersion in diesel fuel, oils, hydraulic fluids and more. Blowing
sand, dust, rain, salt fog and freezing rain mean nothing to this drive. And
all this while connected to your computer, including open ports.
You may think it’s still over-priced but the included
one-year, one-time, no questions asked, free $2,500 forensic data recovery value
(optional upgrades for three and five years) that comes with this drive makes
it a great value for your priceless pictures and home videos.
This model is USB 2.0 and FireWire compatible for Mac, but there are Windows versions too with USB 3.0 or lower. Stay tuned for my reports from CES in Las Vegas starting January 10.
ioSafe drives, including even more robust desktop “Solo” fireproof
models are available at London Drugs, Future Shop, Staples, Best Buy and at www.iosafe.com where even tougher Titanium
models are available.
