Calgary Fire acting district chief Jason Graham said the call came in around 6:10 a.m. for reports of a house fire on Martindale Drive N.E.

Upon arrival, a second alarm was called to deal with the large volume of smoke and flames, he said.

Seven adults and nine children escaped the blaze and nobody was injured, he added.

“We were sleeping at the time when the fire started,” one local resident said. “As soon as my wife [woke] up she noticed there’s a fire. We have four kids and we moved the kids outside the house so that was our priority.”

Another resident was woken up by a commotion outside his home.

“I heard the bell ringing over and over, so by the time I came to open the door, the ladies were screaming there ‘was a fire in the house,'” he said. “So I came outside and the fire was on that house. Our house was OK, there was no fire or nothing.  But I could see the fire was pushing this way trying to catch on this house. I quickly ran and got my wife and son and we got out.”
