B.C. municipal election 2018: Vanderhoof results

Incumbent Mayor Gerry Thiessen will be back for another term.

Thiessen was elected with 719 votes, defeating Justus Benckhuysen who earned 425 votes.

Four incumbent councillors, Kevin Moutray, Brian Frenkel, Ken Young and John Murphy will be back for another term as well. They’ll be joined by newcomers  Cyndi Lauze and Spencer Siemens.

History

Vanderhoof” — it’s Dutch for “the farm.”

And that’s one activity it was known for in the early years of its development, when industries included cattle ranching and logging.

It would be formally founded by Herbert Vanderhoof who looked to attract settlers to the area on behalf of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railroad.

He promised farmland, businesses, homes, electricity and plumbing. And so they came, making it a hub of logging and ranching, and opening opportunities for canoeists, anglers and skiers.
