Seth Meyers says his new son, Axel Strahl, was born in the lobby of their apartment building.

The Late Night with Seth Meyers host told his audience Monday about the birth of his second child.

Meyers said he figured he had plenty of time when his wife, Alexi Ashe, went into labour Sunday. But she told him she wasn’t able to reach the car, and the baby arrived in the lobby.

The 44-year-old said, “I called 911 and over the course of a minute conversation, I said, ‘We’re about to have a baby — we’re having a baby — we had a baby.”

“I’m trying to calm her down,” Meyers said. “I know because I’ve been through exactly one birth. I’m like, ‘This happens all the time.'”

The SNL alum thanked the New York Police Department, which sent help to the scene moments after the baby was born.

He shared a photo of the entire fire department, which he referred to as “New York’s finest,” tending to his wife in the lobby of the building.

Neighbours had also come to the rescue and kept the baby warm with towels fresh from the dryer.

“I looked at my wife, and the only way I could describe her was she looked like someone who was hiding a baby in a pair of sweatpants,” Meyers said laughing.

Meyers got emotional when he spoke about his wife. As he held back tears, the host joked, “I’m getting choked up thinking about how brave I was.”

Meyers also shared a photo of his newborn son, explaining that his son’s middle name, Strahl, came from his mother-in-law’s maiden name.

They gave Axel the middle name in honour of his wife’s grandparents, who were Holocaust survivors who met in an Austrian hospital the day after they were freed.

Many people took to Twitter to congratulate Meyers on the new addition to his family.

The couple also share a 2-year-old son, Ashe Olsen.
