SPCA wish list to help seized dogs now being cared for in the Okanagan

It was a massive dog seizure from a rural property in Williams Lake involving 46 dogs.

The dogs range in age and are American Eskimo, Border Collie, Husky and Samoyed crosses.

The BC SPCA said the dogs were seized because of a lack of shelter, poor sanitation, and inadequate veterinary care.

All but two of the animals are now being cared for in the Okanagan.

Twenty dogs are in the care of the Kelowna SPCA and 24 are at the Penticton SPCA, while the remaining two are at the SPCA in Quesnel.

“We are trying to make sure that they are happy, eating, and well taken care of,” Pentiction SPCA manager Carolyn Hawkins said. “”We have a bunch of matted dogs with feces in the mats.”

The dogs in both Kelowna and Penticton have been put on anti-anxiety medication to ease to help ease their apprehension with human contact.

On Wednesday morning, the SPCA shelters put out a wish list for anyone wanting to donate items to help with the enormous care involved with that many animals.

  •  High-value food: this is used to “win-over” trust in us as kind humans. These dogs are under-socialized to people and not at all familiar with petting, touching, talking.
  •  Roasted chicken (Not spicy or “special seasonings”, beef or chicken, hot dogs)
  •  Imitation crab meat
  •  Mild Cheddar cheese
  •  Blankets: we need fleece bed blankets and flat sheets (NO bedding that is stuffed like duvets)
  • Towels (big bath towels are best)
  • Laundry soap Pods (Non-scented preferred)
  • Pet-friendly De-icer (for the sidewalks and passageways to outdoor kennels)
  • Gift Cards (Costco, Save-on for example to buy chicken or food as needed)
  • KONG toys that we be stuffed with food. (Small, Medium, and large sizes needed
