Flash freeze conditions created an icy Highway 401 near Brighton, Ont., on Friday morning – Feb 23, 2018

OPP are warning motorists to take precaution due to icy road conditions in Peterborough and Northumberland counties on Friday morning.

Three people were taken to hospital following a head-on crash between a pickup truck and a mini van on County Road 28 near Bewdley, south of Peteborough,  which required one occupant to be extricated.

Witnesses say the driver of the SUV was trapped and a bystander was able to extinguish a small blaze which ignited in the vehicle. The road reopened around 1 p.m.

Meanwhile on Highway 401 in Northumberland County, both sets of lanes were a sheet of ice, forcing the closure of a stretch between Brighton and Colborne as several vehicles were involved in collisions. No word yet on injuries.

Brett Minaker captured video of an OPP officer sliding on the road as he was attempting to lay pylons while transport trucks struggled to get up a slope near the exit ramp to Brighton, east of Cobourg.

Clarington Fire Department was reporting Highway 115 northbound has been reduced to one lane near 7th Concession due to “multiple accidents.” The scene was cleared around the noon hour.
