Brandin Brick, 26, refused to leave his cell for his court appearance Tuesday morning. Brick was scheduled to appear on charges of first-degree murder and kidnapping.
A note has been made on his court file regarding his lack of cooperation.
Meanwhile, Shana Bowman drove from Grande Prairie, Alta., for the court hearing. Bowman was a friend of James Chaisson, the victim.
“JJ. was a really good kid. He was involved with the streets, but not involved with the streets. I think it was a sense of belonging that he needed to feel that he would run with this crew,” Bowman explained.
Chaisson was found dead in the 200-block of Avenue P South on Feb. 14.
Saskatoon police spent the next three days looking for Brick.
He was taken into custody on Feb. 17 in the 1000-block of Matheson Drive without incident. According to police, the killing is not believed to be random in nature.
“He was just a laid back guy,” Bowman said. “(I) don’t know how this happened. They were known to each other. They grew up together and that’s the really sad part because I do know both of them. I do know Brandin and I do know JJ. and that’s what hurts my heart.”
Brick is due back in court on March 1.
