Montreal police are investigating after a fire in Villeray early Tuesday morning claimed the life of an elderly woman – Dec 19, 2017

An 88-year-old woman is dead after a fire tore through a mixed-use building on Guizot Street in Montreal’s Villeray-Parc-Extension-Saint-Michel borough.

The five-alarm fire broke out at 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

The three-storey building houses a bakery on the ground floor and apartments above.

Police said the apartments were evacuated and it was only after the fire was brought under control that firefighters discovered the woman’s body inside the building.

She died at the scene.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

Montreal police have taken over the investigation.

St-Laurent Boulevard is closed between Jarry and de Liège streets to allow for the investigation.
