The man who admitted to killing Calgary mother Christa Cachene was sentenced to 15 years in jail on Wednesday.
Isaiah Rider pleaded guilty to manslaughter in April in the beating death of Cachene.
Defence lawyer Balfour Der said Rider could apply for parole in four years.
Nancy Cachene, Crista’s mother, cried while the details surrounding her daughter’s death were read out in court Wednesday. Afterwards she said she disagreed with the sentence.
“It’s like a slap on the wrist basically,” Cachene said.
“My daughter’s gone because of him and he’s only got that little bit of time.”
With credit for time served, Rider will spend 12 more years in custody.
“We think this sentence is fair and that’s why we put it forward in the first place. It’s not a light touch by any means,” Der said.
“There’s hope for him. There can be rehabilitation, he can be paroled if he behaves himself, if he takes advantage of the facility’s educational opportunities in the penitentiary.”
The judge said the main goal of the sentence was “denunciation and deterrence.” She added that no sentence would bring Christa back or “reflect the value of her life.”
Watch below from October 2015: Christa Cachene’s family tells Global News they had just found out she was pregnant when she was senselessly killed. Nancy Hixt reports.
Cachene, 26, died following a fight at a house party she hosted at her Ranchlands home in October 2015.
When her father found her body, Cachene was so badly beaten, he didn’t recognize her.
“It was just a horrific beating, with hands and fists, a body dumped down the stairs,” Crown prosecutor, Matthew Block, said after Wednesday’s hearing.
A man who Cachene’s mother said was one of her daughter’s best friends became emotional at the end of the sentencing hearing and tried to attack Rider. Police took him into custody from the courthouse hallway.
“It all happened quite quickly.”
