It’s been almost a year since it happened, but a controversial exchange between two members of the Hamilton Police Services Board is still making waves.
Members of the Canadian Polish Congress have appeared before the board, asking for an apology from Madeleine Levy.
At issue is a remark made by Levy, regarding Poland and the Holocaust while talking to fellow board member Walt Juchniewicz last winter. Levy is alleged to have stated during a side conversation between the pair that: “Poles killed Jews at Auschwitz.”
Helen Glogowski, president of the Hamilton chapter of the Canadian Polish Congress, wants Levy to apologize to Juchniewicz and to the Polish community.
Juchniewicz’ actions have also been questioned after he complained to the city manager about secretive board conduct, which was viewed as a possible violation of confidentiality rules under the Police Services Act.
The board had previously voted to refer the incident to the Ontario Civilian Police Commission, but it has chosen not to investigate.
