If you were hoping for the traffic on St. Margaret’s Bay Road to ease any time in the near future, you’re out of luck.

The city announced on Monday that construction on the road has been extended until late November.

Construction began in July but the delay means that the project is now slated to end after nearly five months of closures and traffic restrictions.

The project was originally slated to be completed in mid-October.

For months, residents have complained on social media about how the construction has snarled traffic and made their commutes longer.

“We understand the frustrations caused by a further delay and very much appreciate the patience of residents and motorists,” said Nick Ritcey, a spokesperson with the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM).

“We will be working with the contractor to expedite the completion of this project as much as possible and are hopeful the project will conclude before this date.”

Ritcey says that multiple factors have contributed to the delay. They include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Bedrock encountered under the street for underground infrastructure installation
  • The unanticipated removal of very old, unmarked water/sewer infrastructure
  • Additional sewer and water lateral installations
  • Additional storm sewer connection installations

The HRM says that crews will continue working a seven-day work week during the next few months in order to finish the project as quickly as possible.
