A 12-year-old Brandon boy is facing charges after he reportedly stole a car, ran a red light and caused a transit bus crash that led to a building evacuation.

Brandon police say around 3:30 p.m. on Friday, they received a report that a 2011 Lincoln MKS had been stolen from a residence in the 300-block of 4th Street.

According to police, the stolen vehicle was driving on Princess Avenue when it went through a red light and forced a bus to swerve to avoid a collision.

The bus crashed into a building at the corner of the intersection, causing structural damage. The bus had to be left at the scene overnight to prevent the possible collapse of the building, as upstairs residents had to be evacuated due to safety concerns.

Remediation work has since taken place and crews were attempting to move the bus on Saturday.
