Woman charged in Alberta man’s disappearance, death met victim through online dating site

Calgary police say a woman now charged in connection with an Alberta man’s disappearance and death met him on an online dating site.

Fletcher Kimmel, 30, was last seen at the 7-Eleven in the 3500 block of 39 Avenue N.E. in Calgary on Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2016. His body was then found in a wooded area near the Jumping Pound Demonstration Forest on Jan. 29, 2017.

On Friday, officers took two women into custody in connection with the investigation.

On Monday, police confirmed one of the women had been released without charges. The other, 33-year-old Stephanie Lee Outram of Calgary, is charged with indignity to a human body.

“We had several calls and tips that came in to the Calgary Police Service, and we were able to connect the dots and fill in some gaps in the investigation,” Insp. Paul Wozney said in a Monday news conference.

Wozney said Kimmel and Outram became known to each other through “an online dating service,” but said the relationship “wasn’t very long in nature.”

Outram also had 20 outstanding warrants that police said were unrelated to Kimmel’s death.

Police have also been able to identify a man believed to have used Kimmel’s bank card at a convenience store on Sunday, Oct. 9, 2016. Police had previously released a photo of the man and issued a public plea, asking for anyone who knew his identity come forward to investigators.

“He spoke to investigators, provided us with some information. We’re now going over that information with a fine-tooth comb – and now we’re going to move forward with other investigative avenues.”

When asked if charges were pending against the man, Wozeny said police were “certainly looking in that direction.”

“This investigation is not closed,” Wozney added, saying it has “picked up steam.”
