One person was killed in a collision north of Calgary on Monday morning.

Emergency crews were called to a two-vehicle crash on Big Hill Springs Road at Bearspaw Road at around 7:30 a.m.

RCMP said the crash happened after a vehicle travelling westbound on Big Hill Springs Road slowed to make a left turn onto Bearspaw Road.

According to investigators, a dump truck travelling behind the vehicle “attempted to avoid striking the rear of the car” by entering the oncoming lane of traffic, where it was struck by an eastbound pick-up truck.

The pick-up truck rolled, coming to rest in the ditch.

The driver of the pick-up truck, a 72-year-old man from Cochrane, died at the scene.

No other injuries were reported.

The crash happened about 20 kilometres northwest of Calgary.
