Editor’s note: On Sept. 19 , Beaumont RCMP issued a release saying the man in question in this story was actually an officer in an unmarked police vehicle. Police said no offence was committed and no further information will be provided.

RCMP south of Edmonton have released a sketch of a man who reportedly presented himself as an officer and approached two teenagers.

At around 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 13, a 13-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl were walking to school in Beaumont, Alta. when a man in a newer, black SUV called them over.

He told them that he was an officer and asked them questions RCMP described as “probing and concerning” in a Friday news release.

The man never made physical contact with the teens and never asked the two of them to get into the vehicle. After speaking with the two for a few minutes, the man drove away.

Police said the man was not dressed in any clothing that would indicate any sort of police or officer uniform.

“Although no one was injured, an exchange like this is alarming, and we want these incidents reported to the RCMP right away,” Staff Sgt. Jeff Egan said. “Parents are encouraged to continue to have discussions with their children about practising street safety, and trusting their instincts when it comes to strangers. Reporting strange events is paramount to our solving them.”

Officers were alerted about the incident that evening and patrols were made in the neighbourhood to see if there were any witnesses to the exchange.

The man is described as in his 40s with green eyes, dark hair and a receding hair line. He had a scarred face and was wearing a dark-coloured golf type shirt.

The RCMP is not only asking anyone in the public with information to come forward, but is encouraging the man to contact police in an effort to “explain his actions and clear this investigation.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the Beaumont RCMP at 780-929-7410 or call your local police detachment. If you want to remain anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers by phone at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or online.
