Man dies after medical emergency causes his car to crash into Peterborough police cruiser

Police say the driver of a SUV which struck a Peterborough police cruiser on Thursday had suffered a medical emergency and later died in hospital.

Just before 2 p.m., an SUV rear-ended a police cruiser at the intersection of Lansdowne Street and Monaghan Road. The officer suffered minor injuries.

The driver of the SUV — a 61-year-old Oshawa man — was taken to hospital. Police say the investigation revealed he suffered a medical emergency while driving. He was later pronounced dead at Peterborough Regional Health Centre.

“The death does not appear suspicious and has been turned over to the coroner,” police stated.

The police vehicle sustained minor damage. Police are not releasing any further details.
