Colourful Queen’s engineers united in hair during Orientation week

What’s purple with big hair? A Queen’s engineering student of course, at least this time of year. Orientation week is filled with music, games and plenty of colour. Wild hairdos in every shape and style can currently be seen around the university campus as well as throughout the city.

Second-year engineering student Monica Cowper believes the hair thing started back in the 80s. “One freak group did their hair all crazy and all the other freak groups were very jealous. The freaks are frosh group leaders and all the frosh wanted hair cuts too.”

Now, the big hair has become a fall fixture at a school that prides itself on tradition. The wacky hair styles are definitely head-turners.

Isabelle Callaghan is also a second-year engineering student. She says a good part of a day was spent on doing the hair. “It’s a real bonding thing. We were doing each other’s edge cuts, trying really to help each other out — it’s really awesome.”  She adds engineering orientation week is all about creating a sense of community and family and a time to enjoy before school starts next week.
