Plans for a new elementary school and “community hub” within Hamilton’s downtown core are expected to come together this fall.
The city’s public school board is developing the project on the eight-acre site where Sir John A. MacDonald Secondary School currently sits. The school will close in June of 2019.
Board Chair Todd White says about a dozen community partners have already shown an interest in being part of the “community hub.”

He adds that public consultation is planned for October when residents, businesses and interested partners can provide input in regards to their priorities for the area.
Based on early feedback, White suggests that could range from health-care services and literacy supports to recreational facilities and affordable housing.
The board hopes to pitch its detailed concept to the province’s education ministry by the end of the year.
