Winnipeg Goldeyes with comeback victory in playoff opener

Winnipeg Goldeyes

The Winnipeg Goldeyes battled back to win their first game of the playoffs on Wednesday in Lincoln, Nebraska.

The Goldeyes fell behind by four runs in the early going but a four run sixth inning helped propel the Goldeyes to the game one comeback victory over the Lincoln Saltdogs.

After winning eight of his last nine decisions to close out the regular season, Goldeyes game one starting pitcher Kevin McGovern surrendered a run in each the second, third, fourth and fifth innings in taking a no decision. He allowed four earned runs on seven hits over five innings while striking out five Saltdogs’ batters.

Trailing by four runs David Bergin hit a two run double to narrow the gap. A bases loaded walk and a sacrifice fly would even the ball game at four apiece. The Goldeyes then took the lead for good in the eighth inning. Casey Turgeon bounced a grounder through the right side of the infield to score Wes Darvill from second base to give Winnipeg the 5-4 lead.
