The man wanted in connection with the death of a 67-year-old man found in northwest Edmonton Saturday was “located in a field in Rimbey, Alta. last night,” police said Thursday.

Walter James Jenkins, 34, has been charged with second-degree murder and two counts of breaching a probation order.

“We would like to thank the citizens of Rimbey who were instrumental in passing on timely information regarding the whereabouts of Walter Jenkins,” Staff Sgt. Bill Clark said. “In addition, we would like to thank the Rimbey RCMP detachment who assisted us in the apprehension of Jenkins.”

Edmonton police’s homicide unit issued a warrant for Jenkins’ arrest Tuesday after 67-year-old Frederick John Dunn was found dead in his home on Saturday.

An autopsy performed Tuesday morning showed Dunn died from an “incised wound of the neck.” His death was ruled a homicide.

Police released a photo of Jenkins on Tuesday and said he was wanted on a “murder-related warrant” in connection with Dunn’s death.

Investigators do not believe Dunn and Jenkins were known to one another and they did not reveal a motive for the homicide.

“Considering Mr. Dunn did not know the accused, we are very grateful to now have Jenkins in custody,” Clark said.

Homicide detectives are in the process of interviewing the accused.

Police would still like to speak with anyone who saw or spoke to Dunn, specifically at the Westmount Mall food court, in the days leading up to his death. Anyone with information is asked to call the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online.

This is Edmonton’s 18th homicide of the year.
