Tournament hosts pledge $100,000 for Saskatoon minor hockey

SASKATOON – The new year will surely be a big one for local fans and players as two massive hockey tournaments make their way to Saskatoon in 2013.

Yesterday, the host committees for the PotashCorp University Cup and the MasterCard Memorial Cup pledged $100,000 towards grassroots hockey programs for Saskatoon’s underprivileged youth.

A joint press conference was held at Princess Alexandra School’s outdoor rink to announce the contribution to KidsSport Saskatoon and Dream Brokers.

“Unfortunately, many youth face barriers that prevent them from participating. This donation will help eliminate some of those obstacles and lead kids towards improved self-esteem and physical health,” said Shannon Hanson Chair of KidSport Saskatoon.

Funding will go towards offsetting registration fees and supporting young players with transportation and equipment.

KidSport Saskatoon has already allocated nearly $100,000 to support 157 minor hockey players so far this season.
